CPU
2 × Xtensa LX7, 32-bit[2]
Clock
Up to 240 MHz[2]
RAM
512 KB SRAM, plus 0–16 MB PSRAM depending on the module[2]
Flash
8 to 32 MB depending on the module variant[1]
I/O voltage
3.3 V[2]
Wireless
2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi; Bluetooth LE 5[2]
USB
Two USB ports: native USB (OTG) and USB-to-UART[1]
Upload limits
8 MB flash, 320 KB RAM[5]

Upload limits are what a sketch or firmware may use after the bootloader, as the build tools enforce them, not the chip’s full memory.

Can I still use it?

Gotchas

2 known issues
  • Octal PSRAM takes GPIO35–37. On modules with octal PSRAM (the R8 variants), GPIO35, 36 and 37 are used by the PSRAM and cannot be used as I/O.[1]
  • Two USB ports, two serial devices. Logs from the UART port and the native USB port appear as different devices; set the console output accordingly.[1]

History and use today

Editorial

History

The ESP32-S3 arrived in 2021 as Espressif's dual-core chip for AI at the edge, adding vector instructions and native USB to the ESP32 recipe.[1]

Still useful for

The most capable mainstream ESP32 for camera, display, audio and USB projects.
