SMD Resistor Code Calculator
Chip resistors carry their value as a printed code, and the systems look alike but are not: 103 is 10 kΩ in the three-digit code, 1002 is 10 kΩ in the four-digit E96 code, and in 4R7 the R is the decimal point. Type what is stamped on the part to get the resistance in ohms, kΩ and MΩ.
Result
103 = 10 kΩ
| Quantity | Value |
|---|---|
| Resistance | 10 kΩ |
| In ohms | 10000 |
| In kilo-ohms | 10 |
| In mega-ohms | 0.01 |
Which code system is it? Three digits (103) are the standard E24 series, 5% parts. Four digits (1002) are E96, usually 1% parts, where the first three digits are the value and the last is the zero count. R, K and M replace the decimal point and the unit: 4R7 = 4.7 Ω, 1K5 = 1.5 kΩ, 2M2 = 2.2 MΩ. All zeros (0 or 000) is a zero-ohm jumper, not a 0 Ω value.
Common codes at a glance
| Code | Value | Code | Value |

| R33 | 0.33 Ω | 102 | 1 kΩ |
| 4R7 | 4.7 Ω | 103 | 10 kΩ |
| 220 | 22 Ω | 104 | 100 kΩ |
| 101 | 100 Ω | 105 | 1 MΩ |
| 1K5 | 1.5 kΩ | 1002 | 10 kΩ (E96) |
Worked example
A part stamped 103: two significant digits (10) followed by three zeros gives 10,000 Ω, which is 10 kΩ, one of the most common values in any kit. A part stamped 4R7 is 4.7 Ω, the R standing in for the decimal point because a full stop does not survive on a 1 mm package. Open the 103 example.
FAQ
Why is 103 equal to 10 kΩ?
The first two digits are the significant figures (10) and the third is the number of zeros added, in ohms: 10 with three zeros = 10,000 Ω = 10 kΩ. The capacitor code system works the same way, but the value is in picofarads.
What are four-digit codes like 1002?
That is the E96 series used on 1% resistors: the first three digits are the value (100) and the fourth is the zero count (2), in ohms: 100 × 100 = 10,000 Ω = 10 kΩ.
Is 0 the same as 000?
Both mean a zero-ohm jumper: a wire link in a resistor package, used to route a trace across another on a dense board. It is not a 0 Ω value part.
